The Aldi “Ashby 20” is a 20-mile road running race through Packington on Sunday 15th March 2020, starting at 10am. About 1,500 runners will take part, and there are road closures for safety, for a likely maximum period from about 8am to about 3pm. Full details can be found here on the Ashby 20 website
Mill Street will be CLOSED from 9:05 to 10:15 am
Runners come from Ashby, go down Packington’s Mill Street, then do two anti-clockwise laps of the roughly-circular course shown on the map below. The anti-clockwise left side of all roads of the circle are CLOSED during the race. Roads are open only in the opposite clockwise direction. In Heather village, traffic may flow alternately in both directions using Stop / Go boards
At the Bull & Lion on their second lap, runners turn up High Street, Packington, and on up Ashby Road to their finish at Ashby. There is a full schedule of Road Closure details in a table here on the Ashby 20 website
You’ll be able to drive FROM the 5-ways Junction, along Measham Road to Packington, but NOT the other way, due to 1,500 runners coming that way
No wonder the small Packington Communications Group (PCG) were in celebration mode in the photo above – since 2003, the Group has produced ONE HUNDRED issues of Packington Post, our village bi-monthly magazine. Issue 100, distributed during the weekend of 18th / 19th January 2020, is another bumper 16-page edition.
The 9 “core” members of PCG want to pay tribute to the extensive help received from the village:
We would be nothing without the wonderful distribution team, who brave the dark and the cold to deliver hot-off-the-press copies to EVERY VILLAGE DWELLING in EVERY VILLAGE ROAD OR LANE.
We would have little to print without those involved in village activities, who take the time and effort needed to report on their club or group events and happenings.
WE are so grateful to our advertisers, whose contributions are informative and valuable – we know our village supports them, too.
We rely on our dedicated volunteer Parish Council for funding – it was they back in 2002 who highlighted the need for communication within our village, and today it is they who continue to provide much of our funding.
We are so grateful for the support of YOU OUR READERS, who in survey after survey have backed us so fully, and who write in to let us have your thoughts on aspects of our village.

Tuesday 5th November 2019 .. something like this
There is a need to build a safe bonfire. If you can bring material to burn, check the contents before you take it to the site with Chris Miles. He can be contacted on 01530 414378 or 07856 179485. Recent bonfires have been terrific because we have used pallets and fencing – smoke was limited with no green material or toxic waste. If you bring a shed roof, please remove the bitumen felt and put in in the black bin at home. Last year everyone who contacted us was helpful in this regard.
Anyone who has any easily combustible wood such as old fence panels, pallets and old sheds, can bring them to the bonfire site, or make arrangements for collection by calling the contact numbers below. We are now accepting wood, with just one week to go.
The Bonfire Party will be run on similar lines to previous years. Entry will be via the top entrance to the play-area, in Vicarage Lane. If you park in the Recreation Ground car park, please walk up Vicarage Lane to this entrance, it is a safer access in the dark. The event itself is free but we shall ask you for a donation, which can be gift-aided, and will help the charity to pursue its aims.
The bonfire will be lit as near to 7pm as possible and there will be two sessions of display fireworks. In the interval there will be a sparkler session for youngsters accompanied by an adult, this will be free of charge.
Hot dogs, burgers, punch and drinks can be purchased, and we hope you all have an enjoyable time. Please come and support this event no matter what the weather. There will be over £750 of display fire works – the charity had to pay a hefty £400 insurance premium to stage this bonfire, so we need to see the whole of Packington on the Recreation Ground.

Please Do Not bring any of your own fireworks to this event. This includes sparklers. It is a condition of the insurance that only authorised fireworks are displayed, in a safe and secure environment.

The money raised at last year’s bonfire night has been spent on a new eight-seater picnic table, and on repairs to the fencing and the posts surrounding the play area. See you on the 5th?

Just 4 days to go to Party in the Park! Saturday 6th July 2019!
Join with friends and neighbours to party in our fabulous village park. Bring your own foody feasts – Barbecues permitted if they are off the ground and extinguished before you leave. Join in with the Best Decorated Gazebo competition (choose your own theme). We will be having Fun, Games, superb live music, and a bit of magic.
Come and browse in our Market Place area where we have our sweet stall, tombola, glitter tattoos as well as a ‘grown up’ drinks truck, ice cream vendor and hand-made garden accessories for sale. Our donation buckets will be going round to enable us to continue this great event into 2020!
The gates open at 1 pm on Saturday for you to set up your own gazebo, the party begins at 6 pm.
We are still looking for tombola prizes, so please either drop off at Barkers Cafe or bring along on the day. Volunteers also needed to help with setting up the site on Saturday morning at 10am, and for clearing up on Sunday morning, again at 10 am
We also ask that everyone clears their own gazebos off the park Sunday morning, to get the park and play areas clear to use safely.

The new council will convene for the Annual Meeting of Packington Parish Council on Tuesday 14th May at 7 pm in Venue 35. All are welcome.
Firstly may I introduce myself. My name is Robert Martin, I live at 20 Ashby Road, have lived in Packington for 52 years, married to Jean, we have two sons, Richard and Edward. I have served for 12 years on the Parish Council and would like to serve the village for a further term to help provide key services for the village and the interests of the local community and look after and improve facilities in our Parish. Parish Councils are an essential part of the structure of local democracy. I am retired having previously worked in housing management for the North West Leicestershire District Council for 32 years. In addition I was a member of the Council’s Emergency Planning Committee which dealt with emergencies in the community 24 hours. I was chairman of the North West Leicestershire Homeless Project, a registered charity formed in 1989, based at the Marlene Reid Centre which assisted homeless people in North West Leicestershire to secure appropriate accommodation. This project was a valued and much needed service within the community. The project had to close after 25 years. For many years I have been a member of the well organised Packington Neighbourhood Watch committed to crime and anti-social behaviour prevention. There are several issues for the village such as speeding, street lighting and footpaths but the next years will be very important for our village. The proposed construction of HS2, if it goes ahead, and the amount of disruption cannot be pictured. If HS2 goes ahead one of the major issues will be the closure of Ashby Road which HS2 are proposing to close for 19 months. All the village rely on doctors, chemists and schools in Ashby. Limiting the impact of HS2 construction work on residents not just from a highway perspective but on a wider context from a public health and education point of view is vital and we need to be involved in the process. We have a very much appreciated Residents Action Group which are working hard for the best interests of the village. The Parish Council should actively encourage impact from residents on what the community needs. We make decisions on behalf of the people in the Parish. Residents can bring to the attention of the Parish Council anything that concerns them. We should be the first place you can go to with concerns or ideas.
