Dingy Bike Ride Advert imageMarc writes:

Join me in a new monthly ride initiative, which will focus on connecting people with the outdoors, using biking and the great outdoors as medicine in the management of mental illness. The project is called dingy.life

I held a social ride on World Mental Illness Day, at Hicks Lodge on Sat 14th October, and plan a monthly ride for the foreseeable future supporting the charity MIND.  We raised £45 which was never my intention, but riders donated, so I thought what a great idea. A link to our next event is here – you can register there so I know how many are coming, or just turn up. Please meet at Hicks Lodge  LE65 2UP at 10am on Saturday 11th November 2017.

Report on Village HS2 Meeting Friday 29th September 2017

This village meeting, organised by the Packington HS2 Response Team in the Memorial Hall, was attended by approximately 60 residents.

The aim of the meeting was to give villagers a better understanding of what the Team have being doing on their behalf in respect of HS2, since the public meetings in January and February, and to explain the implications of the confirmed route. The meeting was given a brief background to HS2 in this area, a summary of the formal consultation response, and information on further lobbying of HS2, Government and local councils since the formal submission.

Residents were thanked for responding individually, as this had contributed significantly to overturning the November 2016 route proposal, which would have been by far the worst option for Packington. Of seven proposed route changes to HS2 Phase 2 being consulted on, our section was the only one where the November 2016 proposal was thrown out. Sadly, our attempts to promote an example route that missed Packington completely, and eliminated impact on 90% more homes, as well as schools and businesses, was not given serious consideration.

The implications for Packington of the confirmed route were explained. Our community will still suffer noise and dust pollution during construction, there will be serious visual impacts, transport links will be disrupted over a lengthy period, and the train will be heard and seen once work is completed, causing permanent blight on the village. Our HS2 Response Team’s View of the newly-confirmed Route

“Good News – but Impact Lessened, not Removed”

Conservation Area – Mill Street from Proposed HS2 Route, not now to proceed.

Residents will already be aware that this week the Government announced its decision not to adopt the change of route for HS2 to the east of Measham, first proposed in November 2016. This is good news for the village, as that revised route was the worst of all options, not only for Packington but also for neighbouring villages. Many of the objections that we included in our response on behalf of the village are referred to in the analysis of responses supplied to the Secretary of State.

Since the 9th March, when the consultation period closed, the Response Team has continued to lobby Ministers, and indeed the Prime Minister, seeking a less harmful route.

We have been told by HS2 Ltd that they were surprised by both the number and the quality of the responses to the consultation about the route change in this area. SLC Rail, who are consultants to the District Council, have said that we should be proud of our achievement in overturning the route change proposal, as it is rare for this to happen.

We would like to thank the many residents of Packington, and their friends and family outside the village, who made the effort to submit individual responses to the consultation. Without your involvement we probably would not have achieved this outcome. The weight of objections really does seem to have made a difference.

Sadly Packington will still be faced with the constructional and operational impacts of a high speed rail line close to the village. The impact has been lessened, not removed. Consequently the Response Team will continue to lobby HS2 Ltd during the design stage, in order to minimise the adverse effects on Packington and its residents as far as is possible.

We look forward to the continued support of the people of Packington.

Richard Jones
Chairman, Packington HS2 Response Team
