On Friday 8th May 2015, for 6 months Every Friday and Saturday Night, 10pm to 3am
In consulting with Ashby Town Council, Ashby Civic Society, North West Leicestershire District Council and Taxi operators, Leicestershire County Council are implementing on a six month trial period a part-time taxi rank which is to be installed in Ashby for use on Friday and Saturday nights. The rank will operate between 10pm and 3am in Market Street to make it easier, and safer, for people returning home after a night in the town. The rank will be clearly defined so people know where they can safely get a taxi after a night out and where taxis can park in a queue.”
The lay-by would continue to operate as usual during the day and at all other times (i.e. for use by shoppers etc). A further taxi facility is being provided by converting the existing double yellow lines outside of the Birds Confectioners into a bus/taxi clearway for use by buses during the day, and taxis in the evening.
The rank, which will provide 18 taxi parking spaces, will be in the lay-by on the north side of Market Street. It will be initially introduced on an experimental basis and will be monitored before a decision on whether to operate it on a permanent basis is made.
The effectiveness of the rank will be entirely dependent on the responsible and proper use by the taxi operators. Should poor parking and driving habits continue, or the rank is underused then consideration would have to be given to the future of allocated taxi parking. On that basis, it is recommended that the rank be introduced on an experimental basis.
